Yemen History Background
The Arabia Felix (Yemen) has fascinated many travelers during the last centuries. The country of Queen Saba has been for centuries the center of civilization. Although its doors remained closed for sometime to the outside world, the Modern Yemen gives you the opportunity to discover its much Historical places especially after the Reunification that made Yemen fully opened to tourism. Confident of its prestigious past the tourist may use this recent opportunity because of the tremendous possibilities Yemen can offer such as discoveries of cultural and architectural and discoveries of beautiful landscapes and historical places. YEMEN BEFORE ISLAM (THE ANCIENT YEMENI KINGDOMS)

The ancient history of the Yemeni Kingdoms can be divided into two main periods. The first begins B.C & the second begins A.D until the Ethiopian invasion of Yemen before Islam.
There are 3 kingdoms famous of Yemeni ancient Kingdoms MA'AIN, SHEBA & HEMIAR. Those kingdoms were rely on the trade of the myrrh & frankincense, which coming from the southern Arabian (ARABIA FELIX).
The Sheba Kingdom, had monopolised, the frankincense route, one of the most ancient trade routes, led from southern Arabia to Ghaza in Palestine. This monopoly ended in the first century A.D when the land route was losing it's importance and was finally replaced by a direct sea route between Europe, Egypt & India.
The second era begins with the founding of the Hemiar Kingdom and the rise of centres of civilisation in the high plateau with it's basins and unconquerable mountains. It ends with the decay of these cultures i.e. it lasts from the first till the sixth century A.D.
ISLAM PERIOD:
The Islam was came into Yemen within the Prophet Mohamed life & within the the Persian Governor of Yemen of Bathan from 628 - 630 A.D. Then many of the leaders (sheikhs) and their tribes were adopted & entered to Islam without fighting. Also during this period that the mosques of al Janad and the great mosque of Sana'a had been built.

OTTOMANS (TURKS), THE IMAMATE & MODERN YEMEN:
Between the eighth and the fourteenth century, Yemen was ruled by a series of dynasties. In the mid fifteenth century, the Ottomans (Turks) had added Egypt to their power, also at same time, the north Yemen had added to the Ottomans controlling. Within this period the town of al Mokha on the Red sea coast, became the most important coffee port in the world.
Within the 19th century the British expressed growing interest in the region and had signed series of treaties which was to be known as the south Arabian Protectorate of Great Britain (South Yemen).
After the retreat of the Turks from Yemen in 1918, the Imam Yahya (Zaidi Imam) established the Kingdom of Yemen. He was succeeded by his eldest son Imam Ahmed who stayed in power from 1948 until his death in September 1962 . He was briefly succeeded by his son Crown Prince Mohammed al - Badr who was overthrown by a regime of revolutionaries. The new regime founded the Yemen Arab Republic.
Developments in the southern part of the country were extremely violent during the 1960's . In 1967 Aden gained independence from the British and finally the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen was formed.
On 22nd May 1990 with the unification of the Yemen Arab Republic (North) with the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South) , the Republic of Yemen was declared.
